August 19, 2019 7:00AM PT Craig Zobel, director of “ The Hunt, ” hopes that the controversial political thriller will eventually be seen by audiences, and argues that its message has been misrepresented in media reports. Zobel spoke for the first time since Universal canceled the film’s release on Aug. 10, in the wake of a series of mass shootings and amid a mounting conservative backlash. The film depicts a group of elites who hunt “deplorables” for sport. Fox News commentators have condemned it as “sick” and “awful. ” In response to a series of emailed questions, Zobel said he had no intention to inflame political conflict, which has led to a series of murderous incidents in recent years. “If I believed this film could incite violence, I wouldn’t have made it, ” he wrote. He said that the film does not take sides politically, and that his goal was instead to satirize “both sides” of the partisan divide. “Our ambition was to poke at both sides of the aisle equally, ” he wrote. “We seek to entertain and unify, not enrage and divide. It is up to the viewers to decide what their takeaway will be. ” Universal suspended the marketing campaign for the film after the mass shootings in Gilroy, Calif., El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. In the wake of that decision, conservatives blasted the film as a “liberal fantasy. ” Even President Trump weighed in, denouncing Hollywood’s “racism” and saying the film aimed “to inflame and cause chaos. ” Zobel said the film has been misunderstood. He said it was actually about partisanship, and how both sides fail to fully hear their opponents’ views. “I wanted to make a fun, action thriller that satirized this moment in our culture — where we jump to assume we know someone’s beliefs because of which ‘team’ we think they’re on… and then start shouting at them, ” he wrote. “This rush to judgment is one of the most relevant problems of our time. ” “ The Hunt ” has become a rare black eye for Blumhouse, one of the most successful production companies in the movie business. Founder Jason Blum has had a golden touch with genre films like “Get Out” and “The First Purge, ” which traffic in edgy political themes. But with the “The Hunt, ” that approach has backfired. Executives appear to have underestimated the risks of political satire in the heightened atmosphere of the Trump administration. The studio didn’t seem to have a clearly defined marketing plan for “The Hunt, ” which was marketed as a straight-up thriller, with little hint of its political overtones. Zobel praised Universal for taking a “risk on greenlighting a film not based on prior intellectual property. ” He said that the script did not change significantly during its production and he said that he faced no pressure to tone down the film’s politics. He also said he supported the studio’s decision to delay its release in light of the gun massacres on Aug. 3 and 4 that left 31 people dead. “I was devastated by going to sleep to El Paso and waking up to Dayton, ” he wrote. “These types of moments happen far too often. In the wake of these horrific events, we immediately considered what it meant for the timing of our film. Once inaccurate assumptions about the content and intent of the movie began to take hold, I supported the decision to move the film off its release date. ” Universal has not screened the film for critics, so the political content of the final cut is still largely a matter of conjecture. An early draft of the script obtained by Variety makes clear that the original intention was to depict working-class conservatives as the heroes. They are kidnapped and hunted by “liberal elites, ” one of whom says “Climate change is real” before blowing his victim away. One of the good guys talks about the “Deep State, ” and another fantasizes about going on “Hannity” to expose the conspiracy. The script was written by Nick Cuse, a 29-year-old Harvard grad, and Damon Lindelof, a veteran TV producer and a prolific donor to Democratic presidential candidates. Cuse is a registered Republican who nevertheless gave to Sen. Elizabeth Warren in 2017. He was a writer on Lindelof’s HBO show “The Leftovers, ” and is the son of producer Carlton Cuse, who ran “Lost” with Lindelof. Blum is also a generous supporter of Democrats, and has made no secret of his disdain for the president. The movie’s extreme gore would have made it controversial anyway in the aftermath of the El Paso and Dayton shootings, but its political themes — however misunderstood — made it radioactive. According to the Daily Beast, Trump groused at the White House about “the movie” made by “people who hate Trump. ” “When the focus of your film is about killing, hunting people down, you’re going to have to answer hard questions about why you’re releasing a film like that in today’s climate, ” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “I think Universal just didn’t want to deal with the spin control which would have likely overtaken and overrun their publicity department. ” In a statement to Variety, Universal pushed back on a report that a test audiences had been uncomfortable with the film’s political slant, and also countered claims that the script had originally had a politically explosive title. “While some outlets have indicated that test screenings for ‘The Hunt’ resulted in negative audience feedback; in fact, the film was very well-received and tallied one of the highest test scores for an original Blumhouse film, ” a Universal spokesperson said. “Additionally, no audience members in attendance at the test screening expressed discomfort with any political discussion in the film. While reports also say ‘The Hunt’ was formerly titled ‘Red State vs. Blue State, ’ that was never the working title for the film at any point throughout the development process, nor appeared on any status reports under that name. ” As for Zobel, he said he hoped that the film would become a teachable moment, allowing audiences to think about how politics became so polarized. “My hope would be that people will reflect on why we are in this moment, where we don’t have any desire to listen to each other, ” he said. “And if I’m lucky some of us will ask each other: how did we get here? Plot [ edit] Austria, 1939. Peasant farmer Franz Jägerstätter ( August Diehl), born and bred in the small village of St. Radegund, is working his land when war breaks out. Married to Franziska (Fani) ( Valerie Pachner), the couple are important members of the tight-knit rural community. They live a simple life with the passing years marked by the arrival of the couple's three girls. Franz is called up to basic training and is away from his beloved wife and children for months. Eventually, when France surrenders and it seems the war might end soon, he is sent back from training. With his mother and sister-in-law Resie ( Maria Simon), he and his wife farm the land and raise their children amid the mountains and valleys of upper Austria. Many scenes depict cutting and gathering hay, as well as the broad Inn River. As the war goes on, Jägerstätter and the other able-bodied men in the village are called up to fight. Their first requirement is to swear an oath of allegiance to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. Despite pressure from the Mayor and his farm neighbors, who increasingly ostracize him and his family, and from the Bishop of Salzburg, Jägerstätter refuses. Wrestling with the knowledge that his decision will mean arrest and even death, Jägerstätter finds strength in Fani's love and support. Jägerstätter is taken to prison, first in Enns, then in Berlin and waits months for his trial. During his time in prison, he and Fani write letters to one another and give each other strength. Fani and their daughters are victims of growing hostility in the village over her husband's decision not to fight. Fani is eventually able to visit her husband in Berlin. After months of brutal incarceration, his case goes to trial. He is found guilty and sentenced to death. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] Development [ edit] On June 23, 2016, reports emerged that A Hidden Life (initially titled Radegund) would depict the life of Austria’s Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector during World War II who was put to death at the age of 36 for undermining military actions, and was later declared a martyr and beatified by the Catholic Church. It was announced that August Diehl was set to play Jägerstätter and Valerie Pachner to play his wife, Franziska Jägerstätter. [7] Jörg Widmer was appointed as the director of photography, having worked in all of Malick's films since The New World (2005) as a camera operator. Writing [ edit] Malick said A Hidden Life will have a more structured narrative than his previous works: "Lately – I keep insisting, only very lately – have I been working without a script and I've lately repented the idea. The last picture we shot, and we're now cutting, went back to a script that was very well ordered. " [8] Filming [ edit] The film began production in Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam, Germany in summer 2016. From 11 July through 19 August 2016 the production shot on location in South Tyrol. The man with down syndrome in this movie is one hell of an actor and this is the best film I've ever seen Shia LaBeouf in. Both of them did incredible in this. Every one should watch. Funny. Heartwarming. Adventurous. Fun. And touches on some really serious topics. If you judge a fish by his ability to climb a tree... A hidden life (2019) trailer. I loved it in every way. If you're a fan of the books you'll enjoy every bit of this movie. It made me cry, laugh and despair in the most fairy-like sense. I found Greta's use of contrasting light to represent the past and the present very useful in keeping track of the story (bright and colourful when reminiscing about the girl's childhood but dim and greyish as they step into adulthood. You can sense Alcott's spirit throughout the film, which does a great job at honouring her life and what she believed in, when possible. I whole-heartedly recommend it. It's a fresh take on a classic.

A hidden life santa barbara. I love Terrance Malick and I was honestly really excited to see this movie but it bored me to tears. Franz' story was very moving and incredible but the subject wasn't something that could be stretched into 3 hours. The imagery was beautiful and the acting was good but not a lot really happened. How did I not know Terrance Malick had a new film coming out. Really keen to see it now

“Why didnt you just get saint tattooed on your forehead?” Im guessing hes a saint? The look on his face says it all. A hidden life showtimes near me. A hidden life rotten tomatoes. Taking notes 📝. A hidden life 2019. A HIDDEN LIFE is a return to form for Director Terrence Malick - a wondrous and deeply moving one. After films such as KNIGHT OF CUPS and TO THE WONDER, even Malick's most devoted admirers started to feel that his style had gotten style. After his twenty year hiatus from the Directing chair after DAYS OF HEAVEN in 1978, returned with THE THIN RED LINE. A tone poem told largely through images and narration. He continued that new way of filmmaking with A NEW WORLD, reaching his highest acclaim with 2011's TREE OF LIFE.
With A HIDDEN LIFE, Malick continues in a similar vein, but, with a renewed emphasis on narrative to tie the imagery together. The movie is based on the true story of an Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl) who refused to pledge allegiance to Hitler and Germany during WWII. Franz had been a soldier for Austria, even so, he refused to avow loyalty to the Nazi regime. Franz's wife Fani (Valerie Pachner) and two young children bear the brunt of the village's citizens who have chosen to go along to get along. Franz is given several opportunities to avoid the consequences of refusing to fight by giving an even half-hearted oath to Hitler, but, he stands on principle above all else.
But, pure plot isn't what Malick is after. There is, maybe, about an hour's worth of dialogue over the movie's three hour length. Along with Cinematographer Jorg Widmer and Composer James Newman Howard (augmented with many classical pieces) Malick is striving for something much deeper. Widmer's use of wide lenses allows for the camera to be both intimate as well as giving the viewer a view of the mountainous landscape of the Austrian countryside. Using digital photography exclusively for the first time, Malick was able to have the camera run for long periods in order to allow Diehl and the cast to improvise and inhabit their roles and surroundings.
Malick's aesthetic is certainly not for the masses, but, here it works gorgeously. The cumulative effect is a sense of lives that were actually lived - not just scripted. There is a spiritual feel to the movie that goes beyond the mere religious* into something more profound.
Malick's work has been compared to that of the great Russian Director Andrei Tarkovsky. They are two of the finest Cinema Poets. A HIDDEN LIFE is a superb testament to Malick's art.
. Franz Jägerstätter has been Beatified and made into a Martyr of the Catholic Church.
P.S. the great European actor Bruno Ganz has a small but important role as a Judge. This was to be his penultimate film.

First Hit: I was, and even a day later, confused by this story and film.
We're really introduced to Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) and Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) when Gilda walks up to Cristi and asks to speak with him in his apartment. Cristi whispers into her ear that he apartment is bugged, so she kisses him and tells him she'll play the part of a hooker, and they can whisper her request, which is to help her by getting a criminal, Zsolt, out of prison.
In an early scene, Cristi is on a ferry heading to an island where the ancient people use to communicate by whistling. Cristi is part of a plot working with other criminals to free Zsolt and to do this he has to learn the whistling language.
The language breaks vowels and consonants into seven whistling sounds. This lesson in this language was the most exciting part of the film. I was fascinated with Cristi learning how to whistle and wanted to practice, along with him, right in the theater.
As the film develops, some parts led me to believe that the story in the movie was pre-planned, and I missed something as the film progressed. At other times, I felt as though Cristi and Gilda were planning the ending along the way because they'd fallen for each other.
As an undercover detective, Cristi works for an unnamed woman place by Rodica Lazar, who is trying to play both ends of this story.
The result is a film that has the appearance of a storyline running at two different levels, but in the end, the person sitting next to me asked if he missed something about how the ending worked out, I said "I don't know, and I still don't.
Ivanov was quietly compelling as the detective who was also on the take. Marlon was excellent as the woman who seemed totally in control of story behind the plot. Lazar was strong as the head of the investigation and also susceptible to corruption. Corneliu Porumboiu wrote and directed this quizzical story that left me hanging.
Overall: I either missed a critical section of this Romanian film or the story was attempting to be too elusive.

This is really amazing. It's also good to see that the boy knows to respect boundaries and doesn't go too far (e.g. jumping in with the ray. The ray flapping back to the boy was so fantastic. Thank you for sharing. La gomera beaches.

Su necesidad de funcionar como un evento rebosante de fan-service nostálgico, el haber vuelto a contar con todos los míticos personajes (y en muchos casos, actores) de la película original, el no haber querido dejar descansar, en definitiva, la historia que dio pie a la franquicia, obliga a esta trilogía a concluir de forma satisfactoria con esta inmensa saga de jedis, jawas, yodas y mandalorianos (entre muchas otras cosas). Sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que esta nueva trilogía de 'Star Wars', pese a su taquilla millonaria (con altibajos, pero la primera entrega, también dirigida por Abrams, recaudó dos mil millones de dólares; en efecto, es bueno con los principios) ha estado bañada en polémica, rechazo de un amplio sector de los fans e innumerables broncas internáuticas. Perturbaciones en la Fuerza: la nueva trilogía No está muy claro el motivo por el que llegó Abrams a la trilogía, solo que fue una apuesta personal de la productora Kathleen Kennedy, que antes de que Lucas vendiera los derechos de la saga a Disney, ya andaba acariciando la idea de retomar la saga desde una perspectiva nostálgica y tradicional. Contaría con los actores originales y apelaría a la memoria tintada de rosa de los espectadores, hoy cuarentones, que vivieron de niños los estrenos y reestrenos de la trilogía original. Sobre el papel, Abrams (que cuenta en su curriculum con dos reboots notables: la tercera entrega de 'Mission: Impossible' y la nueva versión de 'Star Trek') era perfecto para ello. La primera película, 'El despertar de la Fuerza', fue un éxito de taquilla, pero entre los fans no hubo tanto consenso: hubo quejas por su algo deslavazado argumento, por un reparto teóricamente poco carismático y conformado por desconocidos que a veces se sentían como comparsas de lo que la gente había realmente venido a ver. Otra vez el Halcón Milenario, otra vez el triángulo original de héroes, otra vez escenarios reconocibles. El apabullante bombazo comercial y, sobre todo, la sensación de que, a diferencia de lo que sucedía en los tiempos de Lucas, la saga había vuelto para quedarse (y, supuestamente, a ritmo de una película al año, lo que también acabaría convirtiéndose en un problema), disolvió un poco el gesto avinagrado de algunos fans. Un nuevo bombazo comercial con la entrega de 2017 (trescientos millones de dólares de presupuesto, mil de recaudación), 'Los últimos Jedi', terminó de destapar los problemas con los fans, que reaccionaron de forma extraordinariamente hostil a la película. El responsable del insulto a la tradición fue, posiblemente, el director con más talento que ha pasado por la franquicia -como demuestra la extraordinaria y recién estrenada 'Puñales por la espalda' -, Rian Johnson, que subió los potenciómetros de la excentricidad, el humor y la presencia femenina. 'Los últimos Jedi' es, a su manera, tan extraña, que el propio Abrams la disculpa diciendo que es en realidad "un metacomentario sobre la franquicia", y lo cierto es que se salta todas las reglas de la narrativa serial: no soluciona ningún cliffhanger planteado en la película de Abrams (quién es Snoke, dónde están los padres de Rey, qué pasa cuando Luke recupera su sable) y además separa al trío de héroes protagonistas. La narrativa es tan anticlimática que los propios actores, como veremos, se quejaron de lo poco conformista que resultaba. 'Los últimos Jedi' revolucionó a los fans y ha condicionado buena parte de los contenidos y el estilo de 'El ascenso de Skywalker' El resultado es, claro, una película que irrita a los fans, pero que sorprende y estimula al espectador ocasional o no demasiado vinculado emocionalmente con la franquicia. Pero el ruido de rechazo fue apabullante: una secuencia inicial en la que hay una comunicación fallida por radio parece más propia de 'Spaceballs' que de 'Star Wars', y se llegó a pedir que la película fuera retirada de la continuidad de la franquicia. Algún fan con demasiado tiempo libre editó un montaje "desfeminizado" de unos magros 46 minutos. Y pudimos poner sobre la mesa por enésima vez la (in)validez de las webs agregadoras de puntuaciones, objeto de otro boicot. La sensación con esta secuela era agridulce: no había funcionado mal en la taquilla occidental, pero sí en China, donde fue vapuleada por la crítica y desapareció de los cines en poco tiempo. Los fans le dieron la espalda y la sensación general era de que no sería una película que perduraría en la saga pese a sus hallazgos visuales y narrativos, sobre todo porque a esas alturas, en 2017, el plan de estrenar una película al año empezaba a desmoronarse. Otras secuelas, otros problemas Por una parte, estrenada un año antes de 'Los últimos Jedi', la precuela 'Rogue One', pese a no haber sido un fracaso (acabó teniendo cifras similares a la película de Johnson), tuvo que rehacer por entero su clímax tras unos pases de prueba desastrosos y en general, carecía del aire de "evento" de las películas principales de la serie. Y 'Han Solo', estrenada un año después de 'Los últimos Jedi', pasó por un lamentable proceso de preproducción del que fueron despedidos dos directores idóneos para el proyecto, Philip Lord y Chris Miller (Disney podía haberse topado con su 'Thor Ragnarok' ahí) y el resultado, pese a su estimable aire ligero, no convenció a nadie. La consecuencia es que Disney decidió renunciar a su idea de una película anual de 'Star Wars' y, de hecho, no tendremos nuevas películas en un futuro inmediato. Los creadores de 'Juego de Tronos' abandonaron la franquicia después de una breve temporada preparando una nueva trilogía, de la implicación de Rian Johnson no hay noticias, y el anuncio de que Kevin Feige se incorporaba a la familia galáctica se entendió como una solución de emergencia para insuflar confianza en la nueva entrega. Sin ir más lejos, 'The Mandalorian' en Disney+ es lo más fresco y sugerente que ha pasado por la saga en años, y es posible que esa narrativa serial y en píldoras que funciona tan bien con la franquicia (las series de animación siempre han estado entre las joyitas ocultas de la casa) sea una estimable vía de futuro. Pero antes, Abrams tiene que dar carpetazo a una trilogía deslavazada y vapuleada por parte de los fans. Y no es tarea fácil: Abrams ni siquiera es la primera elección como director de 'El ascenso de Skywalker', cuyo sillón ya ocupó Colin Trevorrow, director y coguionista de 'Jurassic World', y despedido por Kathleen Kennedy cuando se vio que no seguía exactamente las líneas planificadas. Hoy comparte créditos de coguionista en el film. Así pues, ¿a qué se enfrenta el director? ¿Sale airoso del desafío? Durante las últimas semanas se han oido rumores de todo tipo referentes a pases previos no muy afortunados y a abundantes retoques de última hora. Para quienes quedaron más que satisfechos con 'Los últimos Jedi', fue algo decepcionante el apoyo en bloque del reparto a Abrams, incluso despreciando el trabajo de Johnson, como cuando John Boyega afirmó que "creo que 'El despertar de la Fuerza' fue el principio de algo bastante sólido, pero si soy honesto 'Los últimos Jedi' se me antojó algo dudosa. No comulgo con muchas de las decisiones que se tomaron". ¿Cómo ha capeado con todo ello JJ Abrams? 'El ascenso de Skywalker': exceso de reverencias a los fans Estamos ante una película que, independientemente de sus aciertos (que los tiene) y sus irregularidades (que tiene muchas más), ha sido claramente construída para los fans. Para complacer a aquellos que se soliviantaron con las decisiones anticanónicas de Rian Johnson como la de pasar de puntillas por los orígenes de Rey o dotar de poderes extraordinarios a los Jedi en general, y a Leia y Luke en particular. Y también quiere gustar un poco al mercado chino, que Disney conquista una y otra vez con las películas de Marvel, pero que se le resiste con 'Star Wars' (de forma algo estrepitosa, como en el caso de la película de Johnson). Quizás a eso último puedan deberse los excesos épicos sin demasiada consistencia, como las argumentalmente terribles (pero reconozcamos que sugerentes) secuencias de enfrentamiento final, con multitudes en CGI y cierta tendencia a la horterada macabra. Nunca sabremos qué decisiones visuales y argumentales se han tomado para conquistar Oriente, pero está claro cuáles se han tomado para conquistar a los fans: una cantidad absolutamente asfixiante de guiños, referencias y apariciones de personajes icónicos de la saga. Desde que JJ Abrams tomó las riendas de la resurrección de la saga galáctica, ese fan service apelotonado ha sido una constante en la franquicia. La misma existencia de una película 'Han Solo', contando las aventuras juveniles del personaje más querido de la trilogía clásica, y el punto de partida de 'Rogue One' (la búsqueda de los planos de la Estrella de la Muerte para dar pie a la conclusión de la primera película de 1979) son guiños al pasado. Pero es en esta ocasión donde se le ven más las costuras al invento, donde más artificiosa resulta esa obsesión complacer al fan más interesado en coleccionar cromos visuales que en recibir una historia genuínamente emocionante. Por poner un par de ejemplos sin spoilers, ya que salen en el trailer que pudimos ver hace unos meses, la aparición de Lando Calrissian o la visualización de una inmensa flota de naves del bando rebelde son interesantes sobre el papel, pero están ejecutadas casi como si fueran parte de un formulario con casillas a completar. Por supuesto que siempre es un placer reencontrarse con Lando y su actor original, Billy Dee Williams, que parece pasárselo estupendamente, pero las circunstancias en las que aparece y el uso que se le da y cómo se relaciona con el resto de los personajes es desganado y formulaico. Con la flota de naves igual: su aparición en el clímax del film es tan etérea, tan poco narrativa, que casi es un escaparate de guiños sin más. Hay otra nave mítica que pilota Rey y que no desvelaremos, y a la que se presta algo más de atención, pero estamos en las mismas: su aparición se gestiona de forma tan arbitraria que acaba en el extremo opuesto de la épica y la nostalgia. Por muy pendiente que esté de complacer a los fans, una película no puede ser una lista de referencias (salvo que formen parte de la propia gramática narrativa de la película, a lo 'Aterriza como puedas', a lo que a veces se acerca sin querer Abrams). Es cierto que en ocasiones esos guiños funcionan (la recuperación de R2D2 como clásico bocazas crispante es un hallazgo; y usar a Chewbacca como desencadenante de un clímax es una idea cargada de significado). Y en muchos casos no estorban, como sucede con la fauna planetaria que conocemos de otras películas, alguna especialmente mítica. Pero en la mayoría de los casos, ralentizan la película y la empujan al ridículo. Un ejemplo: hay personajes que, por razones obvias, no pueden aparecer en la película, pero Abrams se las arregla para meterlos, un poco con calzador, como voces en la cabeza de uno de los protagonistas. Y como el truco le gusta, lo repite en el tercio final de la película, con otro personaje, pero el mismo recurso. No como contrapartida del primero, no para compararlos. Simplemente, es pereza narrativa. El tercio final, de hecho, da un frenazo de ritmo apabullante por dedicarse a hacer que desfilen personajes clásicos sin demasiado sentido. A veces estos problemas narrativos devienen ventajas si la película se toma por el lado de la narrativa demente: por ejemplo, el guión está tan editado a hachazos que la primera media hora de película es una absoluta locura de secuencias de acción, persecuciones, saltos a la velocidad de la luz, todo en un contexto de divertida búsqueda del tesoro por parte del trío protagonista. En una de las pocas cosas que Abrams hace bien en modificar de la película anterior, donde los protagonistas pasaban casi todo el metraje separados, aquí un guión frenético y que no mira atrás explota bien la química del trío. El resultado es un primer cuarto de película que no soporta un análisis riguroso, pero que es divertido y descerebrado. Sin embargo, Abrams quiere no solo enmendarle la plana a Johnson -de forma a veces algo insolente-, sino ponerle los puntos sobre las íes a George Lucas, y requetecerrar las trilogías anteriores con una ambición merecedora de mejor vehículo. Por eso retoma por los pelos un villano que todos creíamos muerto, y sobre todo, se despeña con una decisión acerca del pasado de Rey que aquí no comentaremos, pero que os garantizamos que va a ser lo más comentado de esta nueva entrega. Baste decir que relativiza todo el viaje del héroe de Luke Skywalker de la primera trilogía, manosea el concepto de la Fuerza de un modo que ríete tú de los midiclorianos y, sobre todo, nos brinda un final algo impropio para la serie. Que, eso sí, se rinde a las quejas de los fans acerca de ciertas decisiones argumentales de Rian Johnson, pulverizando buena parte del atractivo que tenía el personaje de Rey. Si quedarán conformes es un misterio, pero que la peor decisión argumental de la película se ha tomado como reacción a las quejas, es un hecho. ¿Es completamente desechable 'El ascenso de Skywalker'? Ni remotamente: el primer cuarto de la película, como hemos dicho, es hipnótico en su descerebrada huída hacia adelante, su sentido del humor a base de trompazos y la estupenda relación entre los tres protagonistas. Las secuencias de acción están bien resueltas porque Abrams no rueda nada mal, y hay un par de secundarios que están entre los mejores de esta trilogía: el droide D-0, casi la reducción a la esencia pura de lo que es un robot en este universo; y Babu Frik, el Baby Yoda de la película, una tronchante criatura que proporciona material para decenas de memes. Hay también buenos diseños en algunos escenarios: el camarote privado de Kylo Ren, la Estrella de la Muerte hecha mistos, esa especie de Hades colosal y ceniciento donde se oculta el villano... momentos de brillantez para una película que sin duda tiene indiscutible talento creativo detrás. Pero que si demuestra algo con especial transparencia es que los rigores de las exigencias de los fans dan forma al peor tipo de esclavitud al que se puede someter una propuesta que aspira a un mínimo de identidad propia.

Actualizado el 18 de diciembre de 2019 a las 12:16 Publicado el 18 de diciembre de 2019 a las 09:01 Desde que fuera estrenada hace más de 40 años, Star Wars (La Guerra de las Galaxias) se ha convertido en todo un fenómeno cultural que trasciende la gran pantalla en la que nació. Este fenómeno fan celebra el estreno de su Episodio IX: El Ascenso de Skywalker a partir del jueves 19 de diciembre y nosotros ya hemos podido ver la cinta más larga de este universo cinematográfico de la galaxia muy, muy lejana desde que Disney compró los derechos cinematográficos en octubre de 2012. Como sabréis, esta tercera entrega de la tercera trilogía iba a ser dirigida originalmente por Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World), pero salió del proyecto y en la silla de director se colocó a J. J. Abrams, quien ya había dirigido el Episodio VII: El Despertar de la Fuerza. Como el propio cineasta ha admitido, parte de su idea ha sido deshacer algunas cosas del Episodio VIII: Los Últimos Jedi de Rian Johnson, una de las entregas más polémicas en todo Star Wars. Como alguien a quien no gustaron demasiado ciertas decisiones narrativas en la película de 2017, puedo decir que esta da respuesta de forma bastante satisfactoria a tanto interrogante y situación que se había pasado por alto. J. Abrams no se suele meter tanto en el fango, y el guion que firma junto a Chris Terrio nuevamente vuelve a unir al trío protagonista de Rey, Finn y Poe (siendo claramente ella la que más protagonismo tiene) con algunas de las caras conocidas de la vieja guardia, destacando Ian McDiarmid como el Emperador Palpatine (en lo que hubiera sido la mayor sorpresa de cara a este desenlace... si no fuera porque nos destriparon su regreso desde el primer tráiler), Carrie Fisher como Leia reciclando material rodado antes de su muerte pero no utilizado, el regreso de Billy Dee Williams como Lando Calrissian o Anthony Daniels como C-3PO. La cinta se apoya mucho en el sentimiento de nostalgia y despedida. Al fin y al cabo, el público que acuda a las salas ya sabe que esto es el desenlace de todo lo que conocemos, " el final de la saga Skywalker ", como Disney ha promocionado una y otra vez, así que es imposible no sentirse conectados emocionalmente con esos personajes con los que hemos crecido o a quienes llevamos conociendo tantos años. Más allá de eso, encontraremos una estructura clásica, con momentos muy previsibles y apenas una sorpresa inesperada que no hubieran comentado sus protagonistas, realizadores o se hubiera mostrado en algún material promocional. Teniendo en cuenta el complejo desafío que tiene El Ascenso de Skywalker por delante para abarcar semejante rango de edades (desde niños para los que BB-8 es su mejor personaje de la saga hasta talluditos que querrán ver la despedida y homenaje a Carrie Fisher), podemos decir que afortunadamente nos hemos encontrado una película más adulta de lo que pensábamos. Las escenas con Palpatine son especialmente tenebrosas, casando a la perfección la fotografía de las mismas con la representación del Lado Oscuro, y siendo por momentos más cercanas a lo que sería una película de terror de Star Wars si algún día se hiciese una. En cuanto a las caras nuevas, por desgracia no todas destacan de igual manera. El enigmático personaje de Zorii Bliss es el que más partido podría haber tenido, pero Keri Russell apenas aparece en dos escenas. Esperemos que una serie de Disney+ o algún que otro material canónico expanda y amplíe su historia, porque podría dar mucho más de sí. Más desapercibido todavía pasa Dominic Monaghan como Beaumont Kin, quien simplemente aparece de fondo junto a los líderes de la Resistencia y apenas tiene diálogos, no pudiendo considerarse más que un cameo. Quien verdaderamente destaca es Naomi Ackie como Jannah, a quien se da más tiempo y se explica un poco más de su historia, pero en líneas generales la partipación de los 3 podía haber sido eliminada del metraje sin apenas trascendencia. Igualmente, aparecen un par de personajes de corte más cómico, en ese guiño a los pequeños que suele haber en cada película, como fue BB-8 en El Despertar de la Fuerza y los Porgs en Los Últimos Jedi (aquí regresan). Hablamos del droide D-O y del pequeño Babu Frik, cuya presencia en pantalla ha sido bien gestionada y cada aparición o frase que sueltan nos hace esbozar una sonrisa sin llegar a ser cansinos. Sí, sabemos que esto va de vender muñecos, pero hay formas y formas de hacerlo. J. Abrams, además de encargarse de resolver a su manera todas las lagunas argumentales que dejó Rian Johnson, está excelente en la dirección, apoyado en una dirección de fotografía exquisita y en la tecnología visual contemporánea, que nos permite ver con credibilidad la mayoría de piruetas y loopings de naves espaciales o unas luchas de sable láser escasas, pero muy impactantes. Quizás solamente quede el borrón de una escena concreta a modo de flashback en la que el rejuvenecimiento digital no está a la altura. Habrá que juzgar una vez que la gran masa de seguidores galácticos acuda al estreno, pero también puede haber cierta polémica. Abrams ya vaticinó que introduciría " nuevos poderes de la Fuerza que no gustarán a todos los fans " y así es. No solamente porque haya algunos puristas que prefieran seguir con el ahogamiento a distancia, la atracción de objetos y poco más, sino porque abusa mucho del "porque sí" para presentarlos en pantalla. Es cierto que los caminos de la Fuerza son todopoderosos y no se han estipulado límites, pero quizás aquí J. J se ha pasado de la raya. Aun así, con algunos de ellos ha sido lo suficientemente sutil como para que todo quede a interpretación del espectador y hasta poder lavarse las manos, como se suele decir. Pros El tono maduro en líneas generales. Puede gustar a todo tipo de públicos de Star Wars. Corrige y amplía algunas de las lagunas argumentales de Los Últimos Jedi con bastante respeto. Gran homenaje a Carrie Fisher teniendo en cuenta el material del que se disponía. Contras Cierta escena a modo de flashback. La introducción de nuevos poderes de la Fuerza "porque sí". El veredicto J. Abrams recoge las cenizas que dejó Rian Johnson con Los Últimos Jedi y construye su propio Ave Fénix para una épica y satisfactoria -aunque no perfecta- conclusión a la trilogía, más que a la saga. No se suele meter en muchos charcos más allá de la aparición de nuevos poderes de la Fuerza y quizás abusa un poco de la aparición de Palpatine como villano principal de la función, pero a su vez corrige con acierto algunas de las lagunas argumentales que dejó la anterior cinta a la vez que es respetuoso con ese legado. Daisy Ridley y Adam Driver están de lujo, y todo el reparto de secundarios también tienen sus momentos. Teniendo en cuenta el desafío que supone desarrollar una película para un amplio abanico de públicos, podemos decir que, como adultos, hemos quedado bastante satisfechos con el tono general de la película, muy épica, tenebrosa y emotiva por momentos. Era muy consciente de que de lo que se trataba no era de inventar nada, sino de reconstruir el esp�ritu perdido de una saga. Los nuevos personajes hac�an acto de presencia y en seguida vibraban en la misma longitud de onda que los Leia, Solo, Luke y compa��a de toda la vida. Lo que importaba era confeccionar y levantar desde sus cenizas un ejercicio de memoria que, acept�moslo, tambi�n lo era de m�rketing. M�s que a contemplar nada, a 'Star Wars' se iba a vivir dentro de cada plano. Y acert�. Esta vez el recurso es parecido. Si no simplemente igual. Ahora la idea es completar un recorrido sentimental en el que el espectador ha de hacer suyo cada gesto, cada sacrificio, cada muerte (que las hay) y cada resurrecci�n (que tambi�n). Para ello, Abrams recurre a la pieza sobre la que descansa todo: el momento en el que Darth Vader descubr�a a Luke tiempo atr�s su paternidad; un instante ' rosa ' que se ocult� a los mismos actores en el rodaje. Todav�a algunos no nos hemos recuperado del susto. Digamos que las sorpresas paterno-filiales son ahora la clave de b�veda de todo. No descubrimos nada. Al fin y al cabo, el misterio y gracia de toda esta �ltima serie consiste en averiguar de qui�n es hija Rey, la mujer sin apellidos. La cinta, en consecuencia, se comparta como un melodrama de sobremesa, de revelaci�n en revelaci�n, que para s� quisiera ' S�lvame Deluxe '. Por un momento, de puro disparate, hay que reconocer que el asunto da la vuelta. Y de esta guisa y de la mano de una descomunal Daisy Ridley (ella s�), el director insiste durante todo lo que dura la pel�cula en el valor de la memoria, de la memoria compartida y, m�s importante a�n, de la memoria elegida y construida. Uno escoge a sus amigos, a los Beatles por delante de los Stones y a las galaxias lejanas antes que al espacio como �ltima frontera. Y sobre ese argumento, Abrams se hace fuerte y levanta un laberinto de reflejos tan poco sutil como efectivo. Sin riesgos, eso s�. Otra cosa es ese feo vicio de la nostalgia convertida en mercanc�a, que tambi�n. Abrams no ha querido (o no ha sido capaz, seg�n se mire) completar el giro que iniciara Rian Johnson en la anterior entrega, donde la reglas, por as� decirlo, de 'Star Wars ' eran tensadas hasta muy cerca del m�s delirante y gozoso disparate. Hasta se atrevi� a crear una l�nea argumental que no iba a ning�n lado. Y eso insuflaba una nueva energ�a al conjunto y ampliaba la superficie de �ltima dispersi�n de las galaxias. Ahora, todo vuelve a su ser y el esp�ritu se mantiene inc�lume con el peligro que eso conlleva de acercarse a la torpe repetici�n de la simple f�rmula y, por a�adidura, de la franquicia sobrevenida. No llega a tanto, pero se echa en falta m�s reposo, m�s claridad, menos aturullamiento-porque-s�. Al fin y al cabo, el Scattergories es de todos. Una de las an�cdotas m�s repetidas y que tra�amos a colaci�n en estas mismas p�ginas (o lo que sea) este mismo martes, es la de la caja vac�a. Cuando la f�brica de juguetes que serv�a los mu�ecos de la primera entrega se qued� sin existencias ante la irrefrenable demanda, empez� a entregar embalajes sin mu�ecos como vale de compra. It had a good plot and the actors were phenomenal absolutely blow away By Driver and Ridleys performances. Especially with such a raw and emotional final scene together they managed to pull it of spectacularly. The one thing that got me along with so many others was Ben Solos death. Some may argue it was necessary but with him dying it conveys the wrong message that people who are emotionally abused and tormented don't deserve happiness. Apart from a few minor plot holes here and there, bens death and the fast pace I think it's an ok movie. I'll be seeing it again because I'm a die hard but maybe only one or two more times.

When the movie starts with good few minutes of a car driving down a misty road you know you are in for a long ride. The harsh landscape of the setting is almost a character in the film. It gives the movie almost a magnetic quality. But there's a sense of imminent tragedy lurking underneath it all.
WHITE WHITE DAY tells a seemingly simple story, but is secretive at times, letting the viewers decide for themselves what motivates the characters. And it is often what happens off screen that has the real impact.
The cinematography however goes a bit overboard with still static shots of everchanging nature, as beautiful as they are they quickly turn irritating.
There are wonderful performances from all involved, specifically a tour de force from the lead Ingvar Siggurdson, as he slowly goes to pieces, his anger, pain and frustration tearing him apart on the inside, as he is just sitting there quietly like a bomb ready to go off.
WHITE WHITE DAY has a story to tell and has some interesting characters to match. It is, however first, and foremost an Arthouse film that tries to experiment with cinematography, light and pacing. It also relies on the viewer's attention, but it is a long, slightly depressing movie and not everyone will last the distance. But if you do it is rather rewarding.
Some movies hide the fact that they have little to say beyond the artistic impressions. WHITE WHITE DAY is not such a film.
