Abstract Using a comparative approach to international relations theory, this article examines how ancient ideas are being recycled to describe world order in the 21st century. In particular, it provides a thick description of three models of utopia in global politics — Great Harmony and Harmony with difference from China, and Empire from Hardt and Negri. Using an unexplored set of Chinese-language texts, the article first excavates how Communist Party intellectuals in China have been writing about the ancient Confucian ideal of Great Harmony as a way of promoting the Peoples Republic of Chinas role as a Great Power in the 21st century. Second, it uses Hardt and Negris deterritorialized concept of Empire to criticize Great Harmony discourse as a transcendent and state-centric model of world order. Hardt and Negris notion of immanent utopia is elaborated in the third section using another set of Chinese texts that describe the flexible methodology of ‘Harmony-with-difference. The article concludes that Harmony-with-difference provides a practical logic for achieving Hardt and Negris immanent utopia. The article contributes two things to international relations theory — (1) using Chineselanguage texts, it broadens the reach of comparative international relations theory and (2) it uses the concept of Empire to challenge Chinese concepts of harmony, while using Chinese theory to elaborate on Hardt and Negris utopia. In this way, the article shows how key texts have productively recycled the classical concepts of utopia, empire, and harmony as a way of remembering the future for the 21st century. Young's documentary, executive produced by Parker Posey, delivers a behind-the-scenes look at the New York rare book world. Bibliophiles are likely to be increasingly depressed these days, thanks to the rise of ebooks and the continuing demise of bookstores. D. Young's documentary The Booksellers, receiving its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, should provide something of a balm to those beleaguered souls. Providing a behind-the-scenes look at the world of rare book dealers but also digressing into topics revolving around the printed word in general, the film will be enjoyed by anyone who's ever happily spent hours wandering through bookstores with no specific goal in mind. "The world is divided between people who collect things, and people who don't know what the hell these people are doing collecting things. observes one of the doc's subjects. Needless to say, the film very much concentrates on the former, especially those who attend the annual Antiquarian Book Fair at New York City's Park Avenue Armory, a mecca for rare book collectors. Ironically, as if to underscore the archaic products being exhibited, the armory is a virtual antique itself, dating back to the late 19th century and featuring a giant clock that no longer works. Among the dealers who exhibit there are Dave Bergman, who specializes in giant-sized books and whose apartment is packed to the gills with his inventory. "Every time I buy another book, I have to rearrange the entire place. he says sardonically. We learn that in the 1950s there were 358 bookstores in New York City and that now there are only 79 remaining (it's actually surprising there are still that many. Among the notable used and rare bookstores that have survived are The Strand, opened in 1929 and now the only one left of what used to be dozens of such establishments on 4th Avenue, once dubbed "Book Row. There's also the Argosy Book Store on E. 59th Street, established in 1925 and currently run by the three daughters of the original owner. Tellingly, both of these are family businesses, and their longevity can be ascribed to the fact that the families own the buildings in which their stores are located. The doc fascinatingly delves into the history of book collecting, spotlighting such pioneering figures as legendary British dealer A. S. Rosenbach, whose nickname was "The Napoleon of Books. and researchers Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine B. Stern, who uncovered Louisa May Alcott's pseudonym of A. M. Bernard, which the author of Little Women used when writing pulp romance fiction. Author Fran Lebowitz offers plenty of amusing commentary throughout the film. "You know what they used to call independent bookstores? Bookstores. she jokes, adding, They were all independent. Novelist Susan Orlean weighs in as well, talking about having sold her archives to Columbia University and worrying that in the age of computers, researchers will no longer have the opportunity to explore writers' creative processes. Several of the interview subjects point out that while the internet is great for collectors, who can find anything they want with just a few keystrokes, it's been terrible for booksellers. The very word "Kindle" sends shudders up booksellers' spines, although not all of them are ready to write off the printed word just yet. But despite being based on the first of seven (so far) interlocking pulp romantic-thrillers by J. A. Redmerski, Matias Moltrasio s feature directorial debut isnt splashy or assured enough to leave one wanting more, and the narrative awkwardly completes one arc and begins another after the two-thirds point. Opening on approximately 150 U. S. screens Dec. 6, the film is certainly a viable commercial item among Spanish-speaking audiences. But lets hope any follow-ups leave a stronger impression. Playing a character described in publicity as “one of the worlds most handsome men, ” producer/co-scenarist William Levy is the subtly named Victor Faust, a globe-trotting hitman introduced walking fearlessly into the heavily guarded compound of drug lord Javier (Roberto Sosa. Hes so lethally cool he susses that one of Javiers men has a gun on him, then shoots the man dead — all without even turning around to look. His host wants Victor to kill a rival. But after agreeing and driving off, he finds hes got a stowaway in Sarai ( Alicia Sanz) whos been Javiers involuntary mistress for nine years, since she was 14. Desperate to escape “a world of drugs, murderers, and slavery, ” she tells Victor she can be used as a bargaining chip, since Javier is sure to renege on paying the full fee hes promised his hired killer. The drug lord soon sends goons and his venomous sister (Thanya Lopez) after the uneasily allied duo, being enraged by the desertion of his “favorite. ” Meanwhile, Javier insists on keeping Sarai bound much of the time — seemingly just so she can squirm helplessly in her panties — and communicates with his brother Niklas (Adrian Lastra) who is also in some murky secret organization called “The Order. ” After a few shootouts, the film simply leaves behind what had appeared its principal plot engine (the threat of Javier and company) embarking belatedly on a new focus. Our leads are now glamorous co-conspirators in the business of meting out justice to other wealthy international bad guys, the first being an Italian hedonist (Ettore DAlessandro. The episodic nature of Levy and Jeff Goldbergs script isnt smoothed over by Moltrasios handling, which in its over-dependence on fade-outs seems designed for TV-commercial breaks. Though theres a lot of violence, its more hectic than vivid, with little overall suspense momentum. (Theres also that reliably bad idea, a memory-montage of events just seen minutes before. Even as a luxe fantasy of danger and hotness, the film falls short — though competently assembled in general, real high style is lacking. Too many scenes take place in empty warehouses or obviously dressed sound stages, budgetary concerns apparently hobbling the storys feinted milieu of decadent haunts of the criminal-rich. You dont expect psychological depth from this kind of enterprise, but its disappointing that there isnt more chemistry between the leads, despite a few arty sex scenes.
